A lot of changes took place during that period. Genji shows how great the difference was between the genders by having characters fall in love with each other based on their handwriting. There is in them a perfection of apt phrase, which often enshrines minute but genuine pearls of true sentiment or pretty fancy. Its popularity, however, is undeniable.

Due to the industrial revolution, the country saw progress and growth. It admits words of Chinese derivation and colloquial expressions, and often deals with subjects which the more fastidious Tanka refuses to meddle with.
